Doula FAQ

What is a Doula?

A doula is a person who provides continuous support during labor and birth. The support may include: education, helping a client advocate for herself, physical support, encouragement, and/or creating an environment of calm. A doula notices what the birthing mother needs and responds to individual situations and emotions as they arise. I am excited to help each mother navigate her own unique birth with confidence.

What are the benefits of having a Doula?
Working with a doula before labor enables the mother to consider the decisions she may have to later make during and after labor. During labor, the presence of a doula helps to create a calm and positive atmosphere. This may facilitate a spontaneous vaginal birth. It also helps the mother to lessen her fear and to strengthen her confidence and belief in her own abilities.
What does a Doula NOT do during birth?
A doula does not provide medical care. All exams, fetal monitoring and the delivery of your baby will be done by your medical care provider. A doula will help with communication between you and your husband and your medical team. When everyone is working together, the birthing mother will feel much more at ease.
I have a very supportive husband. Why would I still need a Doula?

Your husband knows you and brings that expertise to the table. I have knowledge and experience about birth and birthing mothers. Together, we can form a team of solid support. Whatever role you and your husband would like your husband to have in your birth, I will encourage. I also support husbands so they can get rest, nourishment, or some encouragement of their own!

At what point in pregnancy should I consider hiring a doula?
Researching and considering using a doula can take place anytime in the first, second or third trimester. It is ideal to hire the doula around 2 months before one’s due date. This allows for plenty of time for the 2 pre-birth planning sessions before the mother goes into labor. Even without the pre-birth sessions, a doula’s presence at a birth can have many of the above benefits.
